A ruler has measurements. A straight edge is anything that gives you a "straight" "edge". Very often a ruler is used as a straight edge.

Precision. Use. A straight edge does not need to have measuring units on it. When it does the accuracy of those units is much closer than a standard ruler because the line which they are on (the edge) is guaranteed straight. Rulers are for general measuring in non critical applications. Their edge may not even be straight. You might even have a circular ruler to measure the distance around the edge of a curve. So to restate it- A ruler measures distance whether it is straight or not. When a straight edge has distance units on it it only measures in a straight line.

A ruler is used to measure things, so it has increments of measurement all along it. A straight edge is anything straight you can use to make lines. Rulers tend to be straight and can be used as a straight edge. But a straight edge can't be used as a ruler.

I believe that a ruler is a straight edge that is calibrated to measure length. A straight edge is anything that can be used to trace a straight line.

Straight edge is just any instruments or things that has straight side that will served as guide.

A ruler (not the person) is a type of straight edge with gradients of measurements, either inches, centimeters, or millimeter. it will served as a measuring tools.

Normally a ruler has two parallel straight edges while a straight edge is only one line.
Theoretically having two parallel lines and a compass allows geometrical constructions not possible with a straight edge
and compass.
I don´think it´s for your niece

I dunno, maybe the teacher is talking about an edge that is straight, like the side of a hardcover book?

Perhaps the teacher is going to go into detail about the measurements on a ruler that aren't present on a regular straight edge?

I have no idea, this is rather complicated. :S
