The qualities or characteristics of Diesel Fuel are:

Grade: the various grades of diesel fuel #1 Kerosene, #2 Diesel Fuel, etc.

Cetane: is the ignition quality of diesel fuel

Lubricity: a measurement of the fuels lubricity qualities

Sulfur Content: is directly related to lubricity of the fuel. But sulfur content has been mandated by the EPA to be reduced to below 15ppm recently for all new vehicles to reduce exhaust emissions, (similar to when lead was removed from gasoline in the early 1970's, eventually you will only be able to buy the new low sulfur fuel for any vehicle) which means additional supplemental additives must be used in most cases to prevent injector pump wear.

Cloud Point / Pour Point: the cloud point is the temperature that diesel begins to cloud or thicken & the pour point is the temperature that diesel will no longer pour or flow. Diesel fuel will gel in cold climates without the specific blend or additional additives to overcome that problem. No fuel flow equals no vehicle go.

Contaminant level: virtually all diesel fuel storage tanks can be contaminated by a variety of things, most commonly is water at the very least, from condensation. When there is water present in diesel fuel, then there is a high probability that it has some level of micro-biological contamination or fungus, growing in the interface between the diesel fuel & the water. The water is heavier than fuel so it sinks to the bottom. The fungus feeds on the fuel & breathes oxygen from the water, it must have both to survive. It can be controlled by certain supplemental additives. But if the contamination level is high enough, then the fungus can plug pumps, fuel filters, injector pumps, injectors etc.

There are other "qualities" to diesel fuel, but these are the main ones.

More Power for towing; Eng. last 2 to 3 times longer; no plugs, wires or distributor to worry about or replace; as long as you fuel, clean air & compression it will run; Easier to maintain. Able to take abuse and still keep running; To an extent they run better in hotter weather.

Hope this helps
