I have to write an essay for my English class, and the prompt reads:

"Equality, respect, and justice are major themes in the novel A Gathering of Old Men. Select one of these issues and identify it's role in the novel.

In a well-developed essay that sites specific examples from the book, identify Gaines' (the author) message about ONE of these theme topics. Explain how this issue has implications for you as a reader or for others in our contemporary society."

I understand all but the last part, about implications. What is it asking for? I don't get it. Please help.

It means, what does equality / respect / justice mean in the novel, for you and for society as a whole. So find examples of equality from the novel, then write about how equality (or inequality) affects your life and the world in general.

You can think of "implications" as "meaning" and you will be correct in this context.

The essay needs to identify the message by Gains, and discuss, what the message mean to you personally.

"Explain how this issue has implications for you..." means "Explain what this issue means to you..." or "Explain how this issue affects you..."
