I am a legal assistant and my boss alone makes about $200,000 a year sometimes more and we are talking about a town of less than 10,000 people. And he isn't the only defense attorney

It depends. I worked for one in a smallish town who took home maybe $90k. If you are in a big firm in a big town with lots of other resources, you could be well into 6 figures+. It all depends on what kinds of clients you get. Some clients can pull $20k out of a hat, others will owe you $20k for years and years and/or you'll never see it. Those are just examples. The numbers are all over the board depending on lots of variables.

Depends on how much trouble your clients get into each year (and how much money your clients have).

... if you're defending joe-schmoe and he maybe gets a traffic ticket or two each year... you're not going to make much.

...if you're Lindsay Lohan's attorney... {{ka-ching!}} ... $$$$$

It varies depending on the prestige of the law firm you work for, whether you're an associate or a partner, etc.
