Just wondering but how did "Dick" become a common nickname for Richard? I know dick wasn't used to name a body part back in the days. Does anyone know the origin?

Can you think of other common nicknames that you've wondered "where did the nickname come from"?

Basically, Richard got shortened to Rich, and the familiar form became Rick. Since rhyming nicknames -- where the beginning sound was often changed -- used to be fairly common, Rick then became Dick.

You can read all about how this and other common, though seemingly-odd, nicknames (Hal for Harry or Ned for Edward, for example) came about here: http://www.behindthename.com/glossary/view/diminutive

It's really interesting! Enjoy. ;)

How about Jack for John, like John F. Kennedy. It's not like Jack is shorter or something...
