I don't understand why bars charge 2.50 a beer when they could easily charge way less and still make money.

Well I've been to nice bars and shitty ones and they all seem to charge the same. about 2.50 for domestic. I just wonder where the price came from. why doesn't other bars charge like 1.50 all the time. I bet they would get alot of business. can you imagine buying beer at a store for 2.50 a bottle?

the government should pass a law against this. I bet if car manufacturers starting charging 3 times the norm that something would be done. I understand supply and demand but this is price gouging. movie theaters, bars, gasoline. why isn't this illegal?

They charge what the market will bear. The bar isn't a local convenience store making a small part of their money selling beer, the major revenue comes from drink sales.

Because people will buy it. They aren't "getting away" with anything, they know that demand is high enough they can charge 2.50 for a Miller Lite and people will pay it. No one is forcing you to pay at that price, if you don't want to you don't have to go to bars.

First, they get away with it because most of us would rather drink beer at a bar than in a convenience store, or outside by the dumpster, or wherever you were thinking about drinking.

Second, they have higher expenses, since most bars spend a little bit more on rent/furniture/decor than a convenience store. Depending on the bar, of course.

You must not understand the basic of a business. There are rent, employees, utilities, insurance and taxes, all most be paid before a business can have profit. I suggest you buy your beer in grocery store and drink at home. Most business only generates 3-5% profit on what they sell.

At a store, the buyer creeps away in a little brown bag and drinks alone. In a bar, the owner has to furnish lights, liability insurance, staff/waitresses/, an ear, and pretzels. Plus, they have to be responsible in case a drunk gets in a car and causes a wreck.

It's because you aren't just paying for the beer. You're also paying for the service, and the "atmosphere" of the bar.

If you want to drink for cheap, stay home and drink. If you want to have a fun night out, be willing to pay for it.

The do it because they can.... why settle for only $0.50 profit when you can get $2.00??

You're at their place... and unless you want to leave to get your drink / food ... you're stuck.

This is the same reason they can charge you $4.95 for a soda at the movies... $5.00 for a churro at an amusement park... Oh, and they disallow you from bringing in "outside" food just to ensure that you have to buy it from them.
