VW is moving, and so is my ex-wife, possibly with my daughter. Is there anywhere at all around there where a person can survive on a teacher's salary?

Taxes really aren't so bad in Virginia, as compared to DC, Maryland, New Jersey, etc. However, the cost of living in Northern Virginia is ridiculous. As a teacher, you will have to find a roommate if you teach and live in that area. A lot of people who work in the Northern Virginia area actually commute about an hour plus to and from work. The pay in that area is good, though. Look at getting a job in that area, but look at living further south or east. Caroline County might be a good spot to start looking at houses, such as the Lake Land'Or community.

If you don't want to work and live in that area, start looking at other counties such as Hanover and Henrico. Good pay, and you can find more reasonable housing.

Good luck!

Virginia is one of the most awful states to live in, if you are a single parent, or even just single. We have the highest tax rate, and since it is a commonwealth, well, even worse!!! I have lived in Virginia my entire life, and soon, I will be leaving permanently to a state where the cost of living is a lot less. But I hope the best for your ex & your daughter.
