i'm from the city (new york city) and when i'm here i always get touched by guys and they always sayin disgusting, perverted stuff to me. but when i went to visit my friend that moved to the south, everybody was so nice. guys held doors for us. they gave us compliments instead of saying "lemme tap that baby" like in new york. why is that?

I think the south the people are more laid back and open. I do not know why but they are. New york is faster paced but I loved it there too but they are quick witted and can be a tad sarcastic but its the size of the city. The amount of people they have to deal with too. So yes the south is great for being nice.

I wouldnt say southerners are the only ones well mannered. Its New York thats your problem, people there are not a good representation of your average black person.

Its also thier accent. If your treated kindly by a northerner its just expected but if you throw in a southern accent for some reason people notice it and see it as being more polite.

tsk...from a fellow New Yorker. Perhaps the places you're hanging out in the Big Apple is where all the losers are. NY has well-mannered people. Plenty of them...why don't you consider moving to the South so you can soak up all that southern charm. Stop dissing NY.

Because in the south, most people grew up with family that stressed manners and southern hospitality. In the south, it is more close knit and friendly than any other coast.

I work in a jail in the south & believe me there are some whites and blacks alike down here that are anything but well mannered!!!! They say the same things and some stuff you probably have never heard! I think it is the generation not the color. Here they leave you in the woods, back dirt roads, bayou's and rice fields! for the snakes and wild animals to scavenge on. Makes me wonder if some will ever be found!

Okay, well I'm from North Carolina, and my parents are black indians. I hate to refer to slavery and the indian crisis, but since we were made to feel inferior to the white people and say "massa" and "sir", I think African-Americans just wanted their children to be respectful anyway. Southern hospitality......ppl in the south are just grits (guys/girls raised in the south). When I was in NY, some black girl pumped into me and I yelled "excuse you!" And then she made some comment about me being a savage, but I just held my tongue........not saying all ppl in NY are rude...but ppl in North Carolina know how to hold their tongues in general. That and boys are probably afraid of going to get a "switch" (tree branch) for themselves when they act up.

I agree, its the southern way.
I live in Texas and even the black guy with pants down to his ankles and boxers up to his chin lol with no shirt and his hat on backwards holds the door open and says "you're welcome ma'am"
You get assh0le blacks like you get assh0le whites but equally you have your pleasent blacks with manner and concern just like you do your whites.
I even had a black guy race up to me today as i was loading my groceries into my car with my two kids in tow and he insisted on helping me so i could get my kids out of the humidity, i was humbled by his kindness, as i would be off anyone with that same generosity in any race/culture!
