I just had my water pump replaced, is it normal that my fan would not come on as often. My macanic did not want to let me go yesterday with out that happening but it wasn't he told me to watch my gages and check to see if it has come on. The temp is normal but no fan yet. I do not drive very far from work and home. It is not leaking and in the past if I have run it I would stop my car in my carport and hear the fan. I want to know if I am freaking out for nothing? Excuse me for being a women but because he stated to watch out for it (the fan) it freaks me out!!! Help!

A new water pump maybe circulating the water through the radiator/engine better, so yes, it is possible that your fan is not coming on as often.

The fans are regulated by the temperature sensor. When the temperature sensor has determined it is too hot, they will turn on the fans.

As long as there are no leaks, and the fan does indeed turn on when the temperature gets hot, you should be fine. Now, if you temperature sensor is always reading cool, or on the cold side, it means your thermostat is stuck open.

I wouldn't worry about the fans not turning on as long as the temperature gauge says the engine is running at normal temperature.

Turning on the A/C will automatically turn on the fans. Turning on the A/C activates the relay switch automatically. (so don't follow italy_coolfun advice).

He SHOULD have ran it long enough for the fan to come on.

If it's going to overheat it will happen in traffic, like at a standstill. That is the only time the fan is nec. (when it's hot enough to turn on the fan)

Watch the gauge at a stop and maybe even one night sit in it idling for 30 minutes or so, either it will overheat ( watch the gaiuge) or the fan will come on.

Let the vehicle idle and put the A/C on. If the fan does not come on after 15-20 minutes, there is a problem.
