it's a d-link dl-784 11a/11g 108mbps router (if that makes a diff)
I went to the 192.168.0.1 thing, entered the pw and username and found the place where it shows the channel... it's a dropdown menu but only has one channel (6) and I can't change it. It keeps d/c there must be something interfering... does anyone know why it only shows one channel? How do I change the channel?

it should let you change it. try changing the speed to 54g or even less and see if that makes a diff

If you cannot change the chanel because only one choice is shown on the drop down, it is very likely the unit does not permit you to change chanel. This is a very low end router with very light capabilities so it may not be able to provide chanel choice.
You should connect to the router using a wired connection (not wireless) whenever you try to change the router settings. Perhaps this will make a difference and enable you to change chanel.
You may also benefit from a firmware upgrade IF a newer version of firmware is availalble. Determine which version you have from the router's web GUI interface (open Internet Explorer, enter the router's LAN IP address, 192.168.0.1 in your case and check out for the firmware version). Go to the D Link web site and see if there is a newer firmware you can download. If there is, follow firmware upgrade instructions.
Always use a wired connection to router for firmware upgrade as well.
You may need to reconfig the router after firmware upgrade as this low end router may loose the config during upgrade.

Take the check mark out of auto channel select then try changing the channel.
