We get bombarded every year in Cornwall, by rich yachty
type people. The thing is, their kids always have really stupid names, and I am pretty sure they must be competing with each other who can call their kid the worst name. Here are a few I have heard this year. Boys. Augustus, Rufus, Jasper,Theodore,Titas, Horatio, Girls.Tabatha, Hettie,Octavia, Augusta,Jacintha,Theadora,Petranella. Aren't they just awful?

Rich people have to entertain themselves, because they have nothing to satisfy or fulfill them anymore- they have to show up everyone, so naming their child something unusual is there way of showing how important they think they are.

I don't think they are awful , I think everyone has different opinions on whats good and whats crappy. Who names a baby Apple, or Moon Unit? 2 stars did. Many of the names you named are common, even tho you might not have heard of them. Pres. Theodore Roosevelt, Jasper White who owns Restaurants, Octavia and Augustus very old known names,Horatio, from CSI Miami, Tabitha, from old program Bewitched. When my eldest son was young and the nite soap opera was on with a character named Crystal he wanted his first child named Crystal. People find characters that they like and name their kids those names.

If only it were confined to the rich. There must be thousands of children who have to grow up, attend school and possibly college, and worst of all, apply for jobs, with names that either make one cringe, or feel overwhelmed with pity.
Of course anyone can change their name, but if one does so when one's parents are still alive, it is a bit of a slap in the face for them, and definitely not conducive to family harmony.
If only parents would take a little time to think things through before saddling their children with a name they will grow to hate. Perhaps this should be part of parenting or ante-natal classes?
It is interesting that all the royals seem to have about ten given names, so that when they grow up, they can use the one they like.

Some people watch too much TV. Titas (variation of Titus), Horatio, Octavia and Augusts(us) are all TV names, from Chris Titus Show, CSI Miami and Rome.
They are going to have some bizarro nick names/abreviations. Wouldn't you love to be an Auggie, Rufy, Theo, Tabby, Ocy, Petrol... You don't want to know what horrible names Titas and Horatio are going to suffer.
Poor kids.

Well they're certainly not all my favorites -- especially the misspelled ones! You'd think if you had that much money you'd at least be literate, right? LOL
But many of those are fairly common, popular choices in the US or UK. And yes, quite a few are seen as "classier" choices than many of the trendy and/or created options generally associated with lower income families. Just a question of personal style, I suppose.
Personally, I'd much rather see parents using actual, interesting names, no matter how uncommon, than making up something truly ridiculous (Moxie Crimefighter, anyone?) or simply misspelling a common word and calling it a name. ;)

They are awful...and historic. These names were once popular and may be up for a renaissance. They sound very Greco-Roman. Andrew is also derived from Greek. For the last hundred years or so, biblical names have been more popular.
I'm concerned about all the little Paris girls and Beckham Boys we're going to have in LA!

It really shouldn't matter what their names are. I mean when people think of names they think differently. But I also think it's pretty low of you to be judging a person by their name and not by their actual personality. Yes they may be rich and what not, but what they name their children does not make them any less different than what a average person would name their child. We just think differently and you have a hard time find this way of naming children even possible.

Yuck. I also find that rich people try to find the most "original" names for their little "angels". They try to be original by coming up with ugly names, and then eventually the middle class starts using the names, and then the lower class, and then the upper class starts coming up with NEW ugly names to go through the same cycle. I prefer classic names such as William and Peter.

most of the names you have mentioned can get away with being shortened....except maybe titas ..which any way u say it is a bit silly...but the new rich or popstars have got to be guilty of giving theyre children names that will forever be laughed about!!!..apple(gwyneth and chris)..and others im not so sad to remeber them all tho....

I love those names. At least they have class and are distinct. Why bother with middle class names like Mackenzy, Aidan, Ashley, Sarah, Angel etc? Why do people try so hard to do what's "normal" and use such standard names? It's ok to be different. It's ok to be unique. It's ok to not be lame. It's ok to choose to raise yourself into a higher class.
