i just got a new bass guitar from ebay cheap. I'm trying to tune it but the strings rattle too much even when i get to the right notes. Is my bass just that bad or do I need new strings or what?

You can try re-stringing it and making the strings tighter.

Or you could raise the bridge slightly - it could be rattling because the strings are too close to the frets.

Raising the bridge a little sounds like your best bet. I don't think re-stringing it would make much difference.

No, it is no longer meant to try this. Is the E string broken? If it does that with a sturdy string, i might propose taking it to the save the place you purchased it or to a repairman for adjustment

Could be an out of adjustment neck too.
