No offense, and certainly I hope you get Qualified answers, but if it was ME shopping; I'd probably ASK the person qualified; at the point of sale.

In some measure it also depends on the insulation of the dwelling; the ways the room might be enclosed; height of the ceiling; fan forced or radiant heat from the fireplace; the temperature levels and ranges you'd be most comfortable with, without wasting fuel.

You need enough BTU output to to heat the the cu ft of the room I tried to find a basic Formula on the net and came up with the below:

Heat rise required is the difference between actual temperature and desired temp.
** To determine cubic footage: Length x Width x Height of structure.
Use this formula - Cubic Feet of Space x .133 x Heat Rise = BTU/HR required.

the question you should be really asking:-
is what output should thE GAS FIRE have to heat the room. a fire place gives off no heat at all..
the retail outlet you are purchasing your fire from will have all that information...
