I was told once that if you put copper (penny's, scrap pipe, scap wire...) in standing water, it would kill the mosquito's.

No..That's an old wives tail and doesn't work. If you have standing water that is creating a mosquito problem, simply pour some cooking oil in the container. If you are going to use the water for plants , this is biodegradable and won't hurt any plant. I will make it undrinkable for humans and pets though. The mosquito's will not be able to lay their eggs on the waters surface due to the oil. Stops them in their tracks!

Works in my rain barrels. Put an old pipe in one and have not had any that barrel. Had a new barrel this year and was full of wigglers. Put a few pipes in it and there all dead now.

not as far as I know... copper does inhibit the growth of algae in birdbaths, etc.....
