In 1000 years evil killer robots will have rebelled against their human overlords, all but wiping mankind from the face of the planet. For most robot musicians the instrument of choice will be a human ribcage, played like a xylophone, but which will produce a much warmer tone than traditional xylophones. Unfortunatley the best robot music will mostly be overlooked in favour of the far more popular, and therefore presumably better music by the likes of My Mechanical Romance and Fall Out Droid.

Considering that instruments very similar to the guitar were played some 5000 years ago, the new instruments may not be as shocking as you might think. One thing you can take to the bank; Keith Richards will still be alive due to new advances in medicine.

MachPen - That is a very Terminator-esque view of the future of music. Glad I'll be missing that concert!

1000 years into the future, Instruments might operate on entirely different acoustics; maybe on alternative sound waves such as electromagnetic and mechanical waves. Who knows? They may not even require anyone to play them; they could be self-mechanized. They will just have to be programmed on a sequencing program so they can play themselves. That would be sad, though. I hope wind instruments or percussion instruments never become obsolete.

With the emergence of quantum mechanics, the possibilities could be limitless. It may be possible to literally play air guitar with your shirt -- or even the air. It's possible that quantum machines could be implanted on your skin so you could produce sounds through your movement without any visible means of measurement.
