20 horse is plenty look on the name plate attached to the boat and it will tell you the max

Our 1973, 17 foot boat has an 85 horsepower Evinrude. That's plenty for us. Depends on what you're doing with it.

probably not a nameplate on a '60 model. we have a couple of 12's around here with 20's. and a few 14's with 25-35's on them.
