Have you checked out Dragon Quest 8? It created by Square-Enix (FF creators) and Level-5. It's pretty non-linear, and has an awesome way to create weapons and armor using an "alchemy pot". This is a turn-based RPG. I actually enjoyed this more than Final Fantasy 12, at least give it a rent. here is an IGN review (they gave it a 9/10):

You could try Neverwinter Nights... it's pretty linear and it's an older title, but it's still pretty fun. I think there's a new one out too, but I've heard that it's not as good.
If you like Star Wars, I recommend Knights of the Old Republic. It's a couple of years old, but it received numerous Game of the Year nominations, and it's one of my favorites. There is also a sequel, but it's not as good (it was very rushed,) and it kinda requires having played the first one.

Neverwinter Nights is great its linear, however if you download player made modules the game becomes non-linear and gains a plethera of added classes, races, and weapons.

Two Worlds is coming out soon, which is said to be a ripoff of Oblivion, so you might dig that one.
Otherwise, you might try some of the Baldur's Gate / Fallout titles, as they are very good as well.
Best of luck to you!
