Heath Ledger is one of those actors who will surprise you. He's not as good as Jude Law, but he's got potential.

I try hard not to pre-judge actors before I see them in the movie. However, when a friend suggested we rent "Music & Lyrics", my initial reaction was, "NO!! It's a chick flick. And besides, it's got Hugh Grant in it. Those are two really big strikes against it." However, the movie also casts Drew Barrymore in the other lead role. I couldn't resist.

To my complete surprise, both actors were excellent, and Hugh Grant doesn't have a bad singing voice. To be honest, if he and Drew Barrymore wanted to record an album of pop songs, I think it could do quite well. Her strength is that she is perky and funny, and that compensates for lack of trained vocal talent. Sometimes (quite often, I hope!) you DON'T want to hear Barbra Streisand.

When they cast Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O'Hara the entire South wanted to boycott the movie. After all, it was blasphemy for a British actress to play the part. They wanted a real southern belle to get the role. Well, that worked out pretty well, didn't it?

When they cast John Lithgow as a tough villian in the Sylvester Stallone movie, "Cliffhanger", I thought they were insane. I only saw Lithgow as a comedic actor. To my surprise, he was one hell of a villian.

Besides, Ledger must be up to the task. In Brokeback Mountain, he had to play a totally straight-looking guy who is gay, while in Cassanova he had the role of a real stud with the ladies, who dresses like he's gay. Kind of ironic.

I think Jim Carey would've been a better Joker.
