I seem to have a shorted 12v adapter in my 2000 GM. It has not functioned since I bought the vehicle. What is the cheapest, best way to go about fixing the problem. I don't have any blown fuses and don't have any other electrical issues. Thanks

The first thing to do is to check to see if there is power to the center of the unit. If there is power and the socket does not work, you have a ground problem. If you have no power, either a fuse is blown or you have a wire loose.

Remove the socket assembly and make sure that the hot and ground wires are connected. Check for power at the hot wire, and continuity on the ground! If they are both good, replace the socket assembly!

If you have no power, you will have to trace the hot wire back to the fault in the circuit!

A bit confused here. If the cigarette lighter socket is the problem then you have no short or it would blow a fuse. A 12 volt adapter would be similar. You need a meter or a test light to see if you have power to the center connection in the socket. If no volts to connection then a broken wire is the problem. Auto Zone or similar parts store would test it for you.

the alternative I went for replaced right into a 12V to 110V AC converter... I picked up a 200Watt unit from Walmart for $40. It has 2 retailers, and may well be used for different home equipment, besides the pc.
