Webster defines "conservatism" as "a political philosophy based on tradition and social stability, stressing established institutions, and preferring gradual development to abrupt change."

Webster defines "liberalism" as "a political philosophy based on belief in progress, the essential goodness of man. and the autonomy of the individual and standing for the protection of political and civil liberties."

I don't know a conservative who doesn't believe in the essential goodness of man - nor do I know a liberal who doesn't want social stability. It sounds to me like there's a little bit of BOTH in ALL of us! So all this phoney-baloney 'labeling' is nothing more than a knee-jerk reaction to the propagandists (like Al Franken and Rush Limbaugh) who want to brainwash their listeners into accepting their ways.
Truth be known: most who label themselves 'conservative' or 'liberal' don't even know the true meaning of the terms!

I'm disillusioned because so many have chosen to divide this nation over obsequious 'labels' instead of thinking for themselves and trying to help unify our country when we need people to stand together and fight to take back our country from the "Republicrats". This monopolistic and corrupt two-party electoral system only limits voters' choices and provides no fresh enthusiasm, no new ideas, no productive change. Not since 1992 when H. Ross Perot 'shook up the system' has there been any political candidate worthy of the voters' privilege. -RKO- 09/06/07

I care because it affects my life. Socialism will steal my freedom and property and must be fought and destroyed.

F_ck the whales, save FREEDOM!

bush-deathgrip :
torture is a tool, just like a hammer, computer, or nuke, it has nothing to do with freedom.
tapped phones do not infringe freedom in any way. nobody is stopping you from making a phone call, but somebody might listen if you are making calls to known terrorists.
what bogus wars? you mean the one that was unanimously approved by Congress and the U.N.?

You're irrational hatred blinds you to facts and reality. You seriously need to grow up and get an education.

It's like when you brush up against an ant bed on accident. Some of the ants go crazy, but most of them are just doing their thing. Some of the crazy ants may bite your foot before you know what's going on. That's the way I see the passionate debate. They are the worker ants that don't know enough yet to see that going crazy doesn't change anything in any real way. But they have to do it anyway. It's their nature.

In the end, status quo will prevail.

Politics as usual.

Because I'm human and have a brain capable of seeing into the future. The Liberal/Conservative debate is a sideshow distracting only those who do not think for themselves.

I care because I despise hypocrisy, lying, ignorance, pandering, thievery, inflammatory and uninformed rants, blanket statements, stereotyping, divisive speech and actions and blind unquestioning allegiance to self serving crooks, morons and profiteers. Zero disillusionment or sidetracking here.

I keep hoping to tune into C-span and catch the opposing sides of the senate and congress in fist fights and cat fights, other than that I don't care. I just bow daily to the all knowledgeable fearless leadership we keep electing.
wm critter makes some valid points - the rest of this seems fairly vapid.

I think people deserve to be granted their basic human rights and I think the current debate is silly and almost immature.
