Depends on your idea of success. I man on an island by himself and content is successful. A stressed out CEO of a large company may not be successful. No penalties for true success. Sacrifices maybe, but not penalties.

I'm not sure penalty is the right word. Consequence maybe, since there is consequence in every choice or action, be it negatives or positive. If success to someone means money,,,,,, well that can complicate ones life as well as make it better in different ways.

Back in college, when I went to bars with my sandals from Wal-Mart, I knew exactly what girls were interested in when they smiled at me.

Now, when I go to bar with Ferragamos, I am never sure. And I am far from being too successful, just your typical kid who just graduated from b-school. Imagine the guys who have been in business for years and truly successful, making way north of seven figures. What do they think when girls smile at them?

So I guess I suggest everybody to find the love your life while still young and poor. Caution though, I did find the love of my life while I was younger and poorer, and she left me because I was so.

I think the penalty might be the fact that you never have enough time for yourself

yes and no.
There is a perceived risk that we will loose our friends and loved ones.
We have to define success though.
Things changes and suddenly it is more appropriate with people that are striving for success in the circle of friends.

Personally i have yet to meet someone that regret success
