I am petrified of spiders and I have never seen one this big in real life, I know it sounds cruel to keep it, but haven't the guts to free it outdoors or hoover it up and let it live in a dustbag. I have secured the beaker down with a good-sized satsuma in fear that it is so huge it might of squeezed itself out and seek revenge by continuously dashing out from under the settee while I am watching tv by myself in the evening. How much longer will I be victimised by it's presence?

Just get rid of the spider if you can't stomp it then get someone who can don't leave it there for you to look at.

This is interesting as I used to be afraid of spiders, and the key words here are "USED TO BE AFRAID". I am now fascinated by them. I even photograph them. How did I get over my fear of them. It was simple. I researched them. I would check out web sites and read about them. They are truly incredible creatures, albeit sometimes they can be brutal.

But this is my suggestion to you. Free the spider. It is living in fear right now and needs to be released. It is true that spiders can live for a very long time in an enclosed area, but what you are doing is cruel. Take a rigid piece of paper and slide it under the beaker and carry it outside and release it.

You have to remember that this spider is way more afraid of you than you are of it. It will try to escape and will only bite should it have no other alternative.

Without spiders, like the one you have imprisoned, the fly, moth and mosquito populations would go haywire, along with other insect species.

I would do some research and find out what type of spider it is. I can assure you, that once you learn something about these creatures, you will no longer be afraid of them.

Send me a photo and I will ID it for you and give you some information about the useful predator you now have trapped.

Let It Go!!!!!!!

Make your self an insect catcher!

On TV tonight someone who loves bees suggested making a bee catcher from two plastic tea-strainers and a pair of kitchen tongs. He cuts off the little bits of strainer that sit on the cup, then drills a hole in two places in each strainer handle and fastens these to the tongs with cable ties.

In no time at all you have a long handled insect catcher suitable for bees, spiders and all the other little critters that wander indoors.

Don't kill them, take them out and give then another chance. Incidentally spiders hate the smell almonds, spray an almond spray around and they'll run away on there own.

It will be there for a while. Not having to maintain a body temperature saves a hell of a lot of energy. Not moving much too.
Slide a piece of stiff paper under the beaker. Then you can carry piece of paper plus beaker outside and release the spider. If that freaks you out ask a friend/family member to do it for you. Remember spiders eat mosquitoes...

I am a bit like that myself but do try to realise that the spider is an animal (not an insect) and you are being very cruel. Either get someone to deal with it or open a door/window and throw the bloody beaker and all outside - give it a chance or for pete's sake kill the poor thing.

I don't know what country you hail from, nor the kind of spider you have trapped, but most spiders can live for a couple of months without eating or drinking any water, so you may as well get used to having him/her as a "House Guest" on Big Brother 9!

better hope his relatives don't find out where he is, they are likely to send the really big ones over to you.

I've just looked it up and, depending on the type of spider it is, it can live up to 18 Months without food or water!! Unbelievable!! Spiders have the ability to store food, which helps if they are in a situation like the one your little treasure is in! LOL!!!... So there is no use in trying to keep it captive! If you can, just get someone to dispose of it for you!! I'd be freaked out too if I saw a huge Spider like that!!
Take Care! Good Luck!!

There is no need to be afraid of spiders; they are even more afraid of you. Now the bad news. They can live for many months in an enclosed space like you have described. Do you know anyone who can do the deed for you? I don't mean killing it; spiders are very useful at keeping the fly population down. I hope you learn to love your new little friend.

There is a rhyme that I heard,I think it goes like this.

If you want the world to live and thrive...let a spider run alive. Is there anyone else thatsheard that.
