x:17 = 9:12
Equation:
12x = 17 * 9
12x = 153
x = 12.75
Answer: the tree is 12 3/4 feet or 12 feet & 9 inches tall

I won't give you the answer, but a hint : draw a line on a piece of paper to represent the height of the lamp (9 cm), then draw a line perpendicular to that to represent the shadow (12 cm). Figure out the length of the side that would complete a triangle, then figure the proportion of the height to the length of the shadow, and multiply it time 17. Or, just do a straight ratio comparison. Either way should work.

The sun casts the same angle shadow on both objects, so just use proportions...
x / 17 = 9 / 12
12x = 9 * 17
x = 12.75ft

You would use proportions to solve this problem.
Using x as the height of the tree.
height/shadow = 9/12 = x/17
Multiply both sides by 12.
9 = 12x/17
Then multiply both sides by 17.
153 = 12x
Then divide both sides by 12.
x = 12.75. The tree is 12.75 feet tall. Or 12 feet and 9 inches.

Let θ = angle of elevation from ground to top of tree.
tan θ = y / 17
tan θ = 9 / 12
y / 17 = 9 / 12
y = (17 ) (3 / 4)
y = 51 / 4
y = 12 . 75

to set this up use hight/shadow=hight/shadow
from here you have x/17=9/12
then cross multiply 17(9)=12x
since 17(9)=153, we can conclude that 153=12x
from there just divide by twelve and you get x= 12.75 Feet

it would depend on wich direction the light/sun is coming from - and how far apart the lamp post and tree are - a few feet and difference in where the sun is can make a difference on how long the shadow appears -

You'd go like this:

Then, multiply 9 and 17 to get 153.
Multiply 12 and x to get 12x.
So ow you know:
153=12x
Divde both sides by 12.
153 12x
----- ------
12.75 x
There.
12.75 is equal to x.
x=12.75, ortherwise known as 12 and one fourth.
