Now, what would happen to any of us who harm a this "officer"

Well the point being, a police dog is considered to be a Police Officer. If you or I harmed that dog, and killed it, we could be facing a capital offense.

In many places you can be charged for attacking a police dog, just as if you had attacked an officer, although they won't go so far as to charge you with murder for killing one. But I think it should at least be treated as an assault. But since the guy was a cop they will never do that.

As for his punishment, they should lock him in a car for 12 hours on a 109 degree day, seems fair.

You know this is really awful. He is a police officer...he knows the rules and regulations but disregarded them. He killed a lovely animal who would die for him...that is criminal.
I believe If we had made that mistake we would surely be put under the jail for many years.
Just because this is a police officer his sentence should be double what it would have been.
My loyalty goes to the dog...he did nothing wrong his partner did however.

lol nice but the premise is valid. Like trial for murder x2 when the victim is pregnant. This countries legal system is very simple indeed. Spend all your money on the best lawyer around and you get away, take the cheap train and go to jail. Its two tiered and thats the sum of things.

To say the very least, he should lose his job. Anyone who's that damned irresponsible shouldn't be working in law enforcement! And you're right. If any of us gave this "officer" what he deserves, it would be a federal offense!

well according to the michael vick treatment :
fire the officer
force his 401 k to be turned over to the spca
have him serve 3 years in hard labor
destroy any chance at him having a job in the future
humiliate his family
basically just destroy the man
but if was a human who had died , well he gets a pass
