a minus 18 divided by 2:

The way you have it written, there are 2 ways to express this term: a - (18 / 2), which would simplify to a - 9, or (a -18) / 2. This is why it is very important that you know the proper way of expressing math terms and equations in text format, that is, using parentheses, plus signs, minus signs and slashes.

7.5 + (-2) = 7.5 -2 = 5.5

Remember your multiplication & division of signed numbers rules:

Plus + Plus = Plus
Plus + Minus = Sign of larger no.
Minus + Plus = Sign of larger no.
Minus + Minus = Sign of larger no.
Plus - Plus = Sign of larger no.
Plus - Minus = Sign of larger no.
Minus - Minus = Minus

Like signs multiplied or divided are plus.
Opposite signs are minus.

I think...I've typed plus & minus so many times here, I'm a little confused myself!

It would be nice if Yahoo!Answers had software that would let you create formulas like you would write them.
