is there a creative / inexpensive way to build countertops with wood and beautitone hardrock coating. Has anyone ever done this? Can I make them smooth? I have far exceeded my budget and need an alternative to expensive countertops.

Start with going to a tile store and look for leftovers. Find something you like, then cut the plywood top to the right size so you do not have to cut the tile. You can use any tile and just use tile mastic to set the tile. use a dark gout. You can put a few tiles in with different colors mixed in for interest. Takes time but, not much money.

With no offense meant at all; I've never heard of the BRAND/TRADE name "beautitone". Is this Concrete backer board, in the most simple of terms?

You have some valid suggestions so far, but offer no real detail as to your intentions. IE: personal, in your home, or otherwise.

Tile; which I do a lot of; isn't "Smooth" in the strict sense. Obviously mica laminate is, and the best bargain for counter tops. Certainly there is Corian, and similar composites, as well as Granites; Marble; etc.

You state you've exceeded your budget, but don't strictly state what STAGE you're at. Have you already installed the Beautitone? AND what do you mean when you say "Coating"?

Sadly today, many pieces of furniture and cabinetry are made with a base of MDF. Plywood is no more expensive, and is a better substance.

Note me if you wish. I'll be happy to suggest.

I have used decorative tile to overcome this problem. They aren't smooth like a counter top so writing on it is a problem but they look nice. For a kitchen, I have used a red tile with decorative tile for the splash. For a bathroom, I have used multiple colors; blue with yellow and a design in some of the tiles, which gave it a pretty cool look. This matched the floor because the floor was blue and the walls were yellow.

Just some thoughts.

My dad used to make countertop by gluing formica on top of plywood. He used a router to cut the formica after the glue had set up. He would run a 2 inch side piece on the counter top, then he would glue the sides first and then lay on the top and after it dryed he would cut off the excess with the router. It looked like a pro job and was very inexpensive to make.

Let me save you some heartache.

How inexpensive are you looking to go? Counter tops are pretty cheap if you go with a basic design. I think I spent $175 and had all new tops that were cut to fit. There were much cheaper options. Just go to Lowes or Home Depot or Menard's and look at your options.

If you try to go cheaper and do it yourself with tile ect, you will end up spending more in materials and your time than you would have if you just went down and ordered some.

I did my counter top with tiles for about 40 bucks! I used the inexpensive white tile and added an occasional decorative more expensive tile to break up the white. It looks great!

There are wood countertops, butcher board. I'm thinking I've seen redwood countertops. As long as the surface is sealed against water and you are very very careful with acids, grease and scraches, I don't see why not. Experiment time.
