no. medicaid and medicare are so mismanaged it isnt even funny. and if everyone gets it and its free, people will use a lot more healthcare and were all going to pay for it a lot more in taxes, plus longer lines and waits for surgeries, etc. i see medicaid people all the time that go into emergency rooms because they have a stuffy nose or some other minor thing and rack up a $1000 bill since they dont have to pay hardly anything. and the biggest thing is less innovation. you take the money out of healthcare you wont get nearly as many new drugs, treatments, etc. as we currently enjoy because there isnt incentive for companies to compete and come out with something better. honestly though i think we should just bump all the lazy *** holes who live off welfare off of healthcare and spend the money on the lower middle class people who work hard but make too much to currently get aid but not enough to afford it.

There is no such thing as "free" health care. It would be paid for by taxes (like all government programs), which means it would be paid for by tax payers. Being a tax, it would be mandatory to pay, even if you aren't sick. So here's what happens, I pay $100 per month for government run health care, but I eat right and exercise, so I never use it. So $100 of my money is being stolen from me for no reason whatsoever. I could use that money to put food on the table, put my kids through college, get job training, or just buy an XBox. But since it is a tax, I am forced to pay for the "free" health care that I never use. In what universe does that sound like a good idea?
Furthermore, if it's run by the government, it is a monopoly. Monopolies are bad, always have been, always will be. Currently, if I have Blue Cross and they screw me, I have the FREEDOM to switch to Aetna, United, Humana, etc. If it's run by a government monopoly, then WHEN they screw me, what do I do? There are no other choices (aka a monopoly). Again, in what universe is this a good idea?
There are no good arguments in favor of a government run monopoly controlling who gets medical treatment, and who lives and dies. It is one of the worst ideas in human history.
...EDIT. To the idiot that said health care is a right: that is just plain DUMB! If there are no doctors, who will fullfil your "right" to healthcare? Nothing can be a right if it requires another person to pay for it. This is the stupidity that our government run schools churn out, what kind of moron would want these same people running our health care system? Insanity!

No. That's a socialist concept.
Health care requires time, dedication and resources. It's not something growing naturally that you can go and get for yourself.
It always require the work of someone else.
If you have the right to health care for free someone else has the duty of providing you such health care for free. Maybe not the person itself that would be paid by the government, but the person who's paying the taxes because the government doesn't have money of its own. And if someone is forced at gun point to provide you with the resources for your health care, you've got yourself a slave.

Short answer how is it ever free. Right now we pay for coverage either by deductions from our pay or on our own plans with direct check if we have insurance. If the government takes over and provides a government plan it will have to pay for this someway because the doctors, nurses, etc do not work for free and health care equipment and tests are expensive so it will never be free we have to pay for it somehow so just wait to see how much tax dollars wil be taken from all of us to pay for this non free service.

No. Putting the government in charge of anything else is just one more step toward socialism. Our health care systems are a mess but putting the government in charge will create more problems than it will solve. Not to mention what it will cost the American people. Our government has grown beyond what our founders intended and is too big as it is. This will just add insult to injury.
For those of you who think a socialist US would be better than a free US, you need to bone up on your history and world politics.

I think every American citizen is entitled to quality health care. Those who cannot afford it, or can't afford insurance premiums, or aren't eligible for insurance, should have the right to free health care. Those who can afford insurance, or can afford private health care, should be expected to 'pay their own way'.
The same thing with Social Security: it's an insurance policy (even TIME magazine said that). We all pay our house and car insurance every month, and hope we never have to file a claim. That should be the very same way with Social Security. Everyobody pays into it. Those who need it, get it. Those who have been fortunate enough to build a comfortable retirement, drive luxury cars, live in fabulous homes, and take exotic vacations should be happy in the knowledge that they helped 'pool' an insurance fund for people that weren't as fortunate as they were. It's called community. -RKO- 09/06/07

No, not free but affordable. There is a difference. Free healthcare would come strictly from tax revenues and run by the governmnt. Affordable healthcare would involve everyone paying a premium and copay based on ability and the government filling in any gaps. Insurance companies would be involved and would have some part in paying and collecting money. The primary decisions regarding health care would be made by doctors and other health care providers. No one should be denied quality medical care because they cannot afford it.

Government providing Universal Health Care is not a good idea. Our government is not the most efficient mechanism to providing something as vital as health care. If you want to know what "socialized medicine" looks like. Take a visit to our Veteran Administration Hospitals or read how our Iraq War Veterans were treated in Walter Reed Medical Center. In one word, DISASTROUS!!

Yes, but it won't be free. The thing is, we already pay quite a bit for healthcare in the us and for those who are uninsured, it's just more than we should be paying.
If you think you aren't paying for those who are uninsured it just makes you ill informed. Premiums have been going higher for how many years?
We should be able to cover every American and spend less on health insurance while still keep our current system, only modify it.

You should realize only those without health care would be in favor of such a plan. Health care is a service, not a right. How does the government benefit from keeping people who can't take care of their finances or land a decent job healthy?
