Poorly maintained Mexican trucks with no pollution controls are now on our nation's highways.
It seems to be only liberals, e.g. unions, Sierra Club, etc., who are defending America against this latest threat.
They pose a threat to highway safety, they increase our pollution, and they open another loophole for terrorists to potentially enter the country.
WHY IS THE GOP PUTTING THE PROFIT MARGIN OF IT'S CORPORATE SPONSORS AHEAD OF THE SAFETY AND SECURITY OF THE USA?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Bush administration can proceed with a plan to open the U.S. border to long haul Mexican trucks as early as next week after an appeals court rejected a bid by labor, consumer and environmental interests to block the initiative.
The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco late on Friday denied an emergency petition sought by the Teamsters union, the Sierra Club and consumer group Public Citizen to halt the start of a one-year pilot program that was approved by Congress after years of legal and political wrangling.
The Transportation Department welcomed the decision and said in a statement that allowing more direct shipments from Mexico will benefit U.S. consumers.

I don't want to see them on the road either but that's part of the developing fallout from our original NAFTA plan. With commerce and trade, the idea of streamlining distribution has got to be addressed. I've driven in Mexico and I've shared American roads with Mexican drivers while living in San Diego. I'm less worried about the pollution controls as I am the way they drive in Mexico. They are a cross between rush hour traffic and demolition derby down there.

Half the GOP. Not all of us.
Neocons v. conservatives.
It avoids our expensive port security, creates an underscreened portal through a much abused border, and undermines/outsources US jobs.
And what part of the definition of xenophobia applies to an historically corrupt system that frequently accepts money in lieu of licensing requirements, and lower wages and benefits undermining locally bargained wages and benefits?
Protectionist, yes. Xenophobic, no.

The neocons use the terrorist threat when it suits their political needs but not when it is in direct conflict with corporate profits. If there were a choice between having Osama Bin Laden drive a truck or a teamster, I think these neocons would take Osama so long as he promised to be nice and charged less.

The plan to merge the US with Mexico and Canada into the North American Union has been ongoing for a while now. They'll be implementing it slowly so we all get used to the idea

I think that you're way off track in your allegation that conservatives are NOT concerned and it's also time that many people wake up and realize that this is not solely a GOP situation. This has been bipartisan from the onset and we have been sold down the drain by politicians from both sides of the fence.

Number one: I think you could have picked a better way to word your question. You singled-out half of our country right off the bat.
Number Two: suthrnlyts's answer pretty much sums it up. This is a “National Issue” – not a partisan one.
As a life long Independent, I care too!

The teamsters union doesn't want it. What difference does it make anyway. Our country is being overrun by illegal immigrants on foot. Now they will truck them in. This country is going down the toilet and neither party gives a s h i t. They only care about their next election. Bastards!

Put me down as one conservative who advocates mine fields along the border. Better read your manual again. It figures that a liberal would be more concerned with what comes out of the tail pipe than who is being smuggled in the back of the truck.

They have to meet safety and pollution requirements:
"Under the pilot program, Mexican long haul trucking companies that have met safety, licensing, and other U.S. requirements will be allowed to operate their rigs throughout the country."
The reason is that Unions don't want competition, and most liberals fall in-line with the Unions. Words to describe their position are Xenophobia and Isolationism.
