I keep hearing all the rhetoric from the Left, but I know several people (including myself) who simply went out and started a business. Success is all about hard work. What gives?

You can make as much money as you want. No one is there to stop you (except the IRS).

Shelynn: I work 60+ hours a week and pay over 45% of my income to government. Reality is what you do yourself. The government will never help you. Life is short. You can do whatever you want, and you do not need tons of cash to do it. The Democrats will raise my taxes and make it harder on me and my business. Explain how this helps me or my employees?

If it's so difficult to get by on $100,000 wouldn't it be easier if the government simply let you keep more of your money? Maybe then you could save for whatever YOU choose.

Those darn republicans refuse to give me all the social programs I want so that I can mooch off of people with more innovation & dedication than me. Why shouldn't I be allowed to have everything that the others work so hard for?

I'm glad to hear that it is so easy for some people to just drop everything and go out and start a business. I'd love to have my own business and have several ideas for a business but there is no way in hell that I can find the financing for my own business. So who did you know or whose *** did you kiss to get the financing? Or is it an SBA loan which means your business was started by a hand-out from the government. I've worked hard all my life since I was 13 years old so don't give me that bs about working hard and achieving...i've been doing that now for 34 years. I'm not going to complain though because my house is paid for, I can afford my utilities and gas for my 1995 Ford and I have lots of family and friends to share my life with. Being rich is a state of mind, not how much money you make or what kind of business you run. When all is said and done, when I leave this world I will be just as equal as you because you can't take anything with you.

The Republicans are keeping it for themselves (money, power, doing the right thing.) You cannot rely on corporations and the "free" market to do the correct thing. That is why government is needed. I think Republicans are lazy and self-serving. I used to vote for Republicans for the tax issue only but I see the error of my ways. The democrats get what is really at stake here and they are the ones who offer solutions to our real social problems that will not simply go away. They are the ones who work. They are the dealers of reality. Republicans tend to ignore reality. Our country is in serious trouble. We need democrats. We do need a balance because both sides are imperfect. I would love to start my own business but I cannot afford to. I have a decent job. My husband and I make over $100K a year but are struggling. We are responsible. We pay our bills. We are not forever spending on stuff we don't need. We don't drive expensive vehicles. We don't take extravagant vacations. We went camping in Maine for a week. We are flying to California to stay with a relative. We went a whole year without a vacation. That's why we have 2 in the same year this year. We need it and deserve it. I work and go to school. I also volunteer. My husband works long hours. There are a lot of us out there who should be doing better than we are. I think, what if we get sick. We are both healthy but we cannot guarantee that will always be the case. We have health insurance now but we could lose at any time because of instability with work. Every person cannot start his or her own business. Are we moving backwards in time? A lot of people do not have the money to start a business. Is it the government's problem? Of course not but they are in a position to help because we are citizens and people. They help out billion dollar corporations. Why is that ok? I don't understand Republicans. They take a lot of money from the government. I would rather people take the money and not a corporation that has no responsibility or accountability to people, the lifeblood of our country.

Only one's self can keep one from becoming successful. Everybody, no matter where you come from can be successful. Success is not measure by money, but by the lifestyle they choose to live. Opportunities are out there if one wants to act on them. Living a good life usually means a person is more likely to act on these opportunities. The people on the "left" who say this are the ones who just think it should fall into their laps without working for anything.

The republicans, like the democrats, stand for big intrusive government and high taxes. That makes it harder to be successful. I am not only supporting my family, but the families of the lazy class too. When socialized medicine hits, we are pretty much screwed. We need to elect conservatives, not republicans.

Unfortunately, there are many barriers to success, mainly at the local level. The government (at all levels) is looking to tax you to death. You will likely have to deal with larger, better financed competitors who know how to leverage the law to quash competition. Insurance and other costs are enormous.

I've known people who complain about the government not helping the poor. Those same people dropped out of high school and have no skills. I have told them that the only person who is stopping is themselves but of course they get mad because they don't want accept that they are to blame.

In the long run, GOP policies erode the economic power of the middle class. The rich get richer and everyone else falls behind.

It's about the big picture, not individual anecdotes and data points.

I am successful AND a liberal who opposes the GOP and it's policies.

Liberals have ALWAYS fought for:

CLEAN AIR
CLEAN WATER
CIVIL RIGHTS
VOTING RIGHTS
EQUAL RIGHTS
ENDANGERED SPECIES
SOCIAL SECURITY
MEDICARE
MEDICAID

These are all ACTUAL NAMES OF LAWS that LIBERALS HAVE FOUGHT FOR and CONSERVATIVES, REPUBLICANS AND RIGHTWINGERS HAVE FOUGHT TO DESTROY.

If you are FOR any of the above, then you share the views of LIBERALS.

I didn't know Republicans were keeping people from being successful.
The worst time ever for my business was during the Clinton administration. Didn't seem to matter how hard we worked, we were fighting to keep afloat. But can I blame that on Democrats?... would seem to be a rather broad accusation.
Right now, business is going gangbusters. But it's not because of a political party, it's because of hard work and quality workmanship.
