The Sun is always redder when viewed at a shallow angle relative to the horizon.

The reason is that blue light scatters much more than red light. When the Sun is overhead, the blue light scatters everywhere (making the sky blue), while the red light basically travels unimpeded by the air. Thus we see a blue sky and a yellow sun.

However, when viewed at a very shallow angle, the light reaching your eyes is traveling through a much greater quantity of air. So much air, in fact, that not much of the blue light reaches your eyes at all, having been scattered away, while the red light does scatter a small amount. Thus we see the Sun and sky both redder than usual.

There is a smog alert currently for my area, so I would expect the rising Sun to be red because of increased air pollution. Haven't you ever noticed this before? It happens all the time, especially in summer in urban areas.

In New Zealand we get a very red sun when there have been bush fires in Australia.

It's pollution. Enjoy it. It's about the only good thing about it.

Red in the morning, sailor take warning; red at night, sailor's delight.

That old ditty is a weather forecast.

If not related to weather, your red sunrise could be caused by smoke from a forest fire.
