We are having one locally and I wanted to give it a go. I'm kinda apprehensive about it though. Should I give blood?

Yes, you should. It's not bad at all. Yes, it's a needle and yes, it kinda hurts, but you can save 3 lives with your donation. So it's worth it to not be a pansy.
You go in and answer like 10 questions (privately, on a computer screen, about your sexual history and travel and such things) and then you get called back to have your finger stuck so they can check your iron level, and also they will check your temperature to make sure you're well enough to donate.
Then, you get up on the table and they stick a needle in your arm while you squeeze a little ball. It generally doesn't take long to fill up the bag of blood, maybe 15 minutes.
Then if you feel OK you get down and go to the canteen and get yummy snacks and soda to get your blood sugar back up.
Most people are totally fine and walk out happy. A few people get lightheaded and have to lay down until they feel better. No one at the blood drive will bat an eye if you don't feel well, so don't worry about being embarrassed. It's part of their job to care for you.
Make sure you go in well-hydrated and have eaten recently.
That will help ensure you have a better experience. Also take a photo ID. Go to www.givelife.org if you have more questions.

Personally I have a fear of needles so I started giving blood this year to get over that fear. Our company has blood drives in the building every couple months. At first I was nervous and scared but honestly it was not bad at all it did not take very long and didn't hurt. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids it will make it go smoother and your blood will flow better meaning less time with the needle in your arm.

Giving blood is a wonderful thing. But you have to be comfortable with needles and being able to give. I unfortunately cannot give blood although I would in a heartbeat. I had cancer and had chemotherapy, so therefore I am not allowed to donate. Through my illness, someone had donated blood so that I can be here today with my family, I am very grateful. The choice is yours and what you are comfortable with. Good Luck and God Bless.

my school holds blood donation drives all the time
i say yes, because your blood can save someone's life

it wont hurt much, they'll probably give u some iron tablets to make up for the blood loss
u might feel light headed after that, but its only temporary
but dont donate blood if u took any medication in the last 24 hours

dont be too scared. think of all people you'll be saving.. their kids, their families
some blood types are in demand beause they are rare
good luck~

Giving blood is a GREAT thing!
I went and I thought they only take a little bit of it. They fill up two big bags of it!
I was like uhh sheesh! haha
If you have good blood and are healthy.. Go for it! It will feel good to know you helped someone out.
Kinda a free aids test too. LOL

Lemon,

It's not bad at all. At least go inside and let the people there test your blood to see if you are anemic, answer their little questionnaire and see if you are eligible to donate.

The only part I do not care for is the initial stick...the anti-coagulants in the tube burns a little, but its never been bad enough for me to stop going.

I haven't because I'm anemic, and they won't take it if your red blood cell count is low, but I would if I could. I think it's important to donate, if you are healthy, and particularly if you have an uncommon blood type. My mother has the Rh factor so they love her.

But, they won't take it if you are anemic or have high or low blood pressure, or if you are underweight. You should check with your doctor first to make sure you are in good enough health to be able to donate.

Hey, thanks for the thumbs down, whoever. Just trying to help, you know?

Yes, I do, and, yes, you should.

I understand your apprehension, but, you'll be fine. The blood you give will save another person's life.

It's in you to give.

I can't. The Iron content in my blood is to high. Not high enough to harm me as I'm used to having it my whole life, however, someone on the operating table wouldn't do very well if they took in my blood. So they won't take mine. They sucked me dry for samples though.

I tried, but they turned me down because I'd been to Britain within the previous year. And I had unprotected sex with my HUSBAND. I gave up on giving blood.
