Lasers will give a better picture, but cost more. Cheap lasers are generally black and white only.

Inkjets spray very small dots of ink onto the paper. The ink comes in cyan, magenta, yellow and black. these can be combined to create the spectrum of available colours. Photo printers can include extra ink colours that extend the range of colours that the printer can reproduce.

Lasers use static electricity to stick very fine powder to the paper, again in cyan, magenta, yellow and black colours. The paper is then heated and the powder melts and sticks to the paper.

All inkjet ink is water based and is subject to smearing and running when it gets damp.

If you want to print on plastic the fuser in a laser may melt it.

For high quality pictures inkjets need special paper that does not absorb the ink. Lasers produce similar quality on all paper stock.

inkjets actually have tiny littlejet-like things that spray ink onto paper (real technical sounding, i know). Laserjets use a tiny laser beam to get toner from a cartridge onto the paper. So, you can picture a laser pointer being more precise than a spray can of paint. Yes, that was a horrible comparison, but not too far off. Laserjets are more expensive than inkjets, and are sharper. For the money though, inkjets are pretty nice. It is about bedget though, color lasers are hundreds of dollars for regular home use, and injets are now sub-one hundred and up. Good luck!

inkjet - as long as its used with good quality paper - normally givs the best reults. Laserjets are good because they don't leave the paper wet with ink, but the quality may not be as high as inkjet because the colour or clearness may not be as vibrant, as it is lasered onto the paper.

hope this wasn't gobbledygook!!
