Well, I'm a (somewhat-bilingual) Canadian, so I kind of like the French by default . . . but let me assure you, the French don't like the Brits either.
You know, every country or culture seems to need another country or culture to hate, or at least make fun of. Usually it's a nearby one. Canadians make fun of Americans, Guatemalans hate Mexicans, and the Brits and French can't stand one another. It's not the individuals we dislike; we can be friends with individuals. It's the country or culture as a whole.
As for the arrogance, well, yes. Arrogance is one of their idiosyncrasies, a part of their culture. Saying the French are arrogant is like saying Americans are ignorant or the Dutch (/Scottish/Jews) are cheap. Not necessarily true, but generally recognized.

Do you actually know any French people? because this is the complete opposite of the many French people I have met and made friends with. They are very courteous, friendly and helpful, at least that has been my experience in different parts of France. The average Briton could learn a lot from them in my opinion.I am British by the way in case you think I am a Frenchman
praising my own folk.

i have grown up somehow just knowing that the Brits are meant to hate the french. I can't stand by that though, because every single french person i have met has been thoroughly helpful and just, well nice. perhaps i have been lucky in just meeting the good ones lol.

I don't understand why we dislike them, all our lives we are taught to favour the underdog, an apt descriptionof the French so why do we break the rule here - and of course there is this thing about the French being to only people who can cook or make love????????????????????

That's funny, I feel the same way with regard to the British I meet overseas. But when I meet them in the US, I tend to like them. Maybe they are on bad behavior in Indonesia or Bahrain, and on good behavior in the US. Or maybe they are nicer to other whites than they are toward heathens with brown skin. Or perhaps different classes of Brits travel to different spots on the globe. I can't figure it out.

Come to think of it, I feel the same way about my fellow Americans, actually.
