The way it came across to me was not as national service in the traditional sense, but as a period in which the youngster would perform voluntary service of benefit to the community. This worries me, especially following Mad Boris's pop at people not having a go at possibly armed troublemakers causing a nuisance on public transport, saying that the risk of getting stabbed is "minimal". Boris wants the public to make citizens' arrests and do the job of the police; now Camera-on wants youth to work in the community. How long before that is corrupted into using them as either cheap or slave labour to remove jobs such as council gardeners or, worse, waste disposal operatives from those who depend upon those jobs for an income?
How would we distinguish between youth volunteers and those committed to a term of community service by the Courts, I wonder? Davy-boy needs to come out of the 1920s when the peasants didn't have the benefit of education, and reslise that we can all figure out these days exactly when he and his ilk are intent on taking us for patsies.
The Tories are notorious for cost-cutting wherever and however they can get away with it. I hope those who would vote Conservative will see this policy for what I strongly suspect it to be - a precursor to a compulsory scheme in which 16+ kids would be made to do any kind of work in exchange for no more than basic JSA.
The nation would get the benefit of having work done in return for the JSA outlay, but the real purpose of it would be to allow the Tories to present a spin-inspired "snapshot" view of how quickly they had reduced unemployment after they took over the reins. The cost to the taxpayer would not reduce and, in reality, the unemployment rate would increase through the aforementioned loss of paid jobs at higher age levels.
So, to answer your Q, no. I think it's a typically awful Tory idea. Yet more proof that their aim is to tread down the common masses. No different to Hard Labour.
Vote independent.

It is just part of an old effort (or so it seems) to expose the good kids to the bad kids in our society and make 'em all bad. There is no way that I would allow my 16 year old when reaching the age of consent (relevant if you give me the chance to explain) to go away from home for 2 or 3 months, unsupervised by me and be influenced by what I don't have a chance to veto is right or wrong for him. NO WAY !! Cameron can stick that idea up his sleeve !!! If he thinks it is such a good reasonable idea then why say he would make it LAW ? -- BECAUSE HE KNOWS DAMN WELL THAT PARENTS WOULD OBJECT !!!
Let me explain why that is a bad idea with something youi might now know. Eastern European countries, thought it a good idea to take youngster (boys and girls) away from the protection and supervision of parents, to camping trips for several weeks, or as in Croatia to build motorways. Yes, kids byilding motorways, LOL. In those yearly events the level of morals in those places was abysmal.... young girls losing their virginity WAS COMMON PLACE. in those things was high. I could go on, WITH PERSONAL KNOWLEDGE but I will not.
Now, surely, Cameron, you MUST know about similar ideas in Croatia, and other eastern European countries SO ARE YOU SUGGESTING something like it for the UK ?? And suggest to make it LAW so parents, ONCE AGAIN, have no right to exercise their right to protect their children from things they find innappropriate.

An idea borne of desperation, I fear. No different to the brigade who say "Bring back borstal!" or "Bring back hanging! That'll teach 'em a lesson."
Why punish the kids? They've already withdrawn welfare payments and looks where that's brought us to...
No, offer them a real chance to improve their lives - give them hope of a having a decent home and a useful, enjoyable occupation - that's what kids need... that, and a keen sense of direction - knowing the difference between right and wrong...
Pity so many kids are clued up to what's right and so many leaders haven't a clue! Put the world's leaders in a boot camp - that might do the trick, but then again, even boot camps can't force them to think.

Another example of a Tory being a stpid Tory.
No.
He is stupid.
I woud rather the UK was not under something that felt to me like a millitary coup. It is like saying that I am a chav. I am 14, and I am most certainly not a chav.
How about enforcing a decent and citizen protective police force before you send us to the army.
Sounds like an idea from Nazi Germany known as 'The Hitler Youth' to me.
It wouldn't work anyway because I and all my friends would refuse to go. Now matter how badly the Torys brain wash us into how "joining the army is fun."
We are kids -- not adults.
Build more prisons, get the chavs, pedofiles and any other threat to soceity in prison for an acceptable amount of time. That should solve the problem.

Is national service a good idea? Yes. Is this halfhearted attempt to win voters a good idea? No, it's pathetic, either bring it back properly or don't even bother, have the courage of your convictions for gods sake man.

Might get some of the Chavs and Hoodies off the streets and force them to learn something useful - ie a skill and some discipline and self respect.
There should be exemptions though - for the academically minded who want to go to University etc.

It reads like a gimmick to me. Only middle class kids will go on it. Chavs will drop out at the first sign of being asked to do something responsible.
The Tories would be better of witholding any benefits until a citizen has worked for 5 years, make young people learn to be be responsible and let them integrate by working for a living. It will be a tax saving for the hard-working majority who have to drag themselves out of bed each morning so that feckless chavs can breed.
Offering them 6 weeks voluntary work when they are 16 isn't going to do much.

Whats being suggested as the form for national service is about as much use to the nation, or those forced to participate, as an umbrella to protect yourself from nuclear fallout.
They have just hijacked the title to sell it to the grey vote that they will get crime off the street.
I'm going grey, but still wouldn't tumble for that crock of shite
