Taking drugs is not a necessity in life. There are no survival skills one can learn from taking drugs. The only thing one can take from those who have died of overdoses is the clear message "DON"T DO THE SAME"! I don't know why that is so hard for so many people to comprehend, but it is.

Everyone needs lessons. Just some people need different ones. Other people can learn from others mistakes. You are constantly learning and experiencing things. Everyone learns in different ways. And sometimes experiencing something over and over, still won't teach the lessons that need to be learned.
This is why some drug addicts continue to do drugs even after a brush with death or the loss of friends, or an alcoholic will continue to drive drunk no matter how many times they lose their license.

It's a learning style - kinda like at school - some kids learn best thru general reading, reflecting, and making mental connections - some kids need to "hands on" APPLY new information as a part of anchoring new info within the brain. Making connections occurs while applying info, and reflection comes after the hands on experience.

People are often better at giving others advice than taking their own or anybody elses.
Curiosity, a belief that "it won't happen to me", a feeling of independence and rebellion, a natural propensity to take risks, low self-esteem are all factors which can lead to self-destructive behaviour.
Who, as a small child, didn't touch the burner on the stove just once?

Yes, true...however, I believe some are born with a natural instinct for right and wrong in life and can choose the best path without lessons or experience.

Unhealthy addictions aren't just drugs or alcohol. Some people drive too fast, engage in risky behavior or seek out partners who will abuse them. All of us need experience to teach us the right way to live. The trick is that you have to pay attention. C. :)!!

i think everyone, to some extent learns from experiences.
for expample, i am the type of person who needs to MAKE mistakes, then i learn from them.
my sister, on the other hand, can just heed advice from other peoples' experiences and learn from them.
(aka: i have screwed up a lot in my life and I've made many mistakes as far as judgment.... but my sister has learned what not to do... by MY mistakes.)
anyways, yea. i think everyone needs to learn through experience, but it doesn't necessarily have to be through first hand experience.

Some need to learn through experience, some don't. Depends on the type personality they have.

some people learn lessons while watching their friends and really, they see the effects of whatever it is that happens. sometimes thats enough to "scare" them straight.
