I think my neighbor used wood, and it is now rotting and looks terrible.

you probably won't even know the difference. You will, however, be better off by getting rid of the flammable materials you had. Wood shingles are expensive, look nice, but cause the most damage because they're so dry. An ember from an adjoining area, grass fire, bon fire, fire on the next street, whatever, WILL cause your house to burn. Unfortunately, because fire crews are already busy trying to put out another fire, you're house may get a head start until the backup crews get there. You're house, your family, and your belongings are much better off.

if you have good insulation in the attic you will never notice
