In everyday usage, a kindred spirit is someone who you feel a special, almost spiritual, connection to. The relationship is based on more than mere friendship or shared interests. Individuals who share a kindred spirit relationship with each other would probably say that they know (not literally, of course) what the other person is thinking without the other person saying a word. Basically it's a relationship based on an intensely spiritual and emotional connection. Another concept similar to a kindred spirit could be a soulmate.

I have a kindred spirit with a couple of best friends. I will know what they are thinking and can tell them what they are thinking and the same goes for them towards me. Like yesterday I was in an emotional mess because I knew my one of my kindred spirits husband was treating her badly and there was nothing I could do for her at that moment and she called me today and I told her about yesterday and what I was going through and she said I called to tell you how awful Marvin (husband) was treating me.
A kindred spirit to me is someone special in your life and you each know what each other is thinking or going to say. It is a deep spiritual gift and it is weird sometimes.
Anyways that is what kindred spirit is to me.

It is someone who cares about the same things you care about. You feel a connection because you are on the same wave length.
