This was said on the floor of the Senate by Senator Schumer yesterday and virtually no one is covering it, "And let me be clear: the violence in Anbar has gone down despite the surge, not because of the surge....The lack of protection for these tribes from al Qaeda made it clear to these tribes, “We have to fight al Qaeda ourselves.” It wasn’t that the surge brought peace here. It was that the warlords had to create a temporary peace here on their own. And that is because there was no one else there protecting them."

Not only is he purposefully insulting the military, insulting their leader...Patraeus...someone HE voted for, BTW, but he is also contradicting what the Dems have said they want all along...an Iraqi populace that is taking control of its own fate.

Schumer is absolutely beneath contempt. He and his ilk can't stand the thought of the military actually succeeding in Iraq.

sprcpt...Read it again...he was saying that because the military could not protect them, the warlords had to do it themselves.

Capt Koyk...I have no problem with the military being criticized when they deserve it...but they don't deserve Schumer's crack at all!!

Chevy...As a US senator, Schumer has a RESPONSIBILITY to consider the impact of ill-conceived opinions...especially when they are solely driven by an agenda....and that agenda being to gain more political power regardless of how it could affect the country. It's contemptible.

2007-09-06 07:25:42 · update #3

sprct...You are purposefully ignoring the link that the warlords would not be in a position either physically or emotionally to begin to support themselves IF IT WASN'T FOR OUR MILITARY. One couldn't occur without the other.

Deno...He stated his "interpretation" of the facts. Wow! That gives Schumer and any other partisan a whole bunch of latitude. They can say any irresponsible thing they want, and just respond with, "Well, that's the way I interpret the facts." Yeah, he can say it...that's freedom of speech, but it does not mean he is immune for being held accountable for his words...and they were insulting to the military.

One last attempt with you, sprct...Yeah, we did destabilize the country. You could say the same for the founding fathers that encouraged separation from England. Political change is rarely a peaceful process...that doesn't mean that it isn't the right thing to do.

The Iraqi police named their police station after US Army Captain Travis Patriquin because of his work in getting the sheiks to side over Alqaeda. every embedded reporter that has been their has said the US is the reason. they are invested in defeat and will go to any lengths including their normal MO of demonizing the troops for their political power. this story has cemented this fact to me. anybody who doesnt see it is nothing but a political hack and in my mind are in the same boat as the traitors. and I dont thrown that word around lightly.

The democrats from Kerry to Murtha, Levine to Schumer, Obama to Rangel have insulted the troops and the mainstream media have not said a word or given coverage of it since they do the same thing every day on their newscasts and front pages.

1. That is not insulting the military.

2. How does noting that the Iraqi warlords making peace with each other to fight the common enemy of Al Queda contradict what the Dems have said they want all along...an Iraqi populace that is taking control of its own fate.

What are you smoking?

Edit - Are you joking, our military is not capable of protecting people as evidenced by the increase of the likely hood of someone dieing a violent death in Iraq by a factor of 30x.

That's like saying that people do not need a gun to protect their home because that's the police's job.

The cops just like the troops are not their until it's all over but the crying.

People with half a brain or more understand that you have to defend and fight for yourself because otherwise your going to get killed.

You have demonstrated that you do not understand this concept.

Edit 2 - No, our invasion by our military is what is responsible for the instability in the country as it is now.

You are purposely ignoring the fact that Saddam kept a lid on this sectarian violence as well as killing religious extremists (Al Queda terrorists) on a regular basis.

Get your facts straight.

What Schumer said is his opinion and it looks correct to me. Surely, you're not suggesting that a US senator is not allowed to express his opinion without being the subject of "outrage" over what some narrow minded people might perceive as an insult to the military. We haven't as yet become a fascist state.

There is no insult to the military contained in Schumer’s statement. If you just want an excuse to bash Senator Schumer you’ll have to do better than this.

your confused. he simply voiced his interpretation of the facts and his opinion. Not once during that statement did I hear him say something bad about the military, just that it's plan has failed and nothing more. I find your blatant hatred of people with opposing views as you extremely hateful and un-american. If you don't want people to be able to voice there own opinions, move to Venezuela.

Criticize THEM?? Say it ain't so...

If you heard that gasbag every day you would REALLY be nauseated. Living in the NY area is like living in the politcal cesspool of the world--and I went to school in DC, so that's saying something.

Either because no one is surprised that a liberal Democrat feels that way or because liberals all feel that way. Just another liberal who pretends to "support the troops but hate the war." Yeah, right.
