I'm looking for a list of city names and their corresponding standard or even non-standard abbreviations. For example many people abbreviate Columbus Ohio as "Cols Ohio".
Is there a good list / file that doesn't cost much or is completely free?

Thanks for taking the time to consider my question. I have a database of about 32000 cities and need to be able to identify possible matches when users look for products or services in a particular city / state combination. So for example

tanning in clev ohio
lawyers in Carson cty nevada
tires in LA California

etc

I don't think there is an standard or non-standard list. Common sense seems to rule. NY is clear. If you are in California, SF for San Francisco is probably fine (maybe even a few other places).

When discussing sports, NO (New Orleans) CHI for Chicago, MIA for Miami are pretty clear as are most of the ones ESPN and other sports stations use. However, out of that context, they might not be understood.

I think the use of such abbreviations depends on where you are when you uses them, as well as the context they are used in as indicated by the sports example above.

Common sense should rule.

You could use airport abbreviations for each city. They can be found on the Internet. Just search airport codes or airport abbreviations.
