It's about a young and idealistic black teacher assigned to teach a very unruly class of kids in London. I remember reading it when it first came out. Sidney Poitier was wonderful in the movie too. Very good book. Pax- C

To Sir, with Love (1967) is a British film starring Sidney Poitier that deals with social issues, especially racism, in an inner city school, which was written and directed by James Clavell and based on the semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by E. R. Braithwaite

Yes to the above, but it is also about finding your special place in life. We don't all want to be millionaires like D. Trump. We will do what seems useful and honorable. We sometimes make great sacrifices to do what we love and have a special talent for. I never made a million dollars as a group therapist but I loved every day of it and couldn't believe I got paid a decent wage to continue growing and becoming a better person.

I hope no one gives you details and specific information, because this is a book that you have to read and knowing bits and pieces before you start will lessen your enjoyment. Basically, it is set in a school in England. And it is poignant, touching, funny and wonderful in ways that you won't expect.
Sidney Poitier starred in the movie version - but the book is much better than the movie.

It really has very little to do with race. It shows how discipline and education can civilize teenagers.
