I actually have a friend who is a scientologist (there's quite a few of them here in FL for some reason!) and she told me that during labor the woman must be completely quiet and not say a single word or sound...but that's not the crazy part at all, she said that abiding by Scientology beliefs the father of the child MUST EAT THE PLACENTA right after that child is born!! I am not kidding you, she sais that every scientologist knows this and abides by this! And I actually read an article about this a long time ago.....do you know if this is true? Why do they do that, how could someone even come up w/ that? Do you think Tom Cruise ate the placenta?

(I want to gag just from writing about it!)

The online news source "The Mirror" reported that Tom had said "I'm gonna eat the placenta. I thought that would be good. Very nutritious. I'm gonna eat the cord and the placenta right there." No report on whether or not he actually did it.

Your friend is right about the "silent birth". They believe that all the screaming and tension "scars" the child psychologically. L. Ron Hubbard (a science fiction writer and the founder of Scientology) asserted that birth is a trauma that may induce "engrams" into the baby. "Engrams" are supposedly "past negative experiences stored in our unconscious mind".

I've heard of people eating the placenta after child birth. I haven't heard about Tom cruise & other Scientologist doing that. The thing about the mother being silent through childbirth isn't true though. The people around her are not supposed to say anything. Which, sh*t to be honest with you I kinda like. I'm 5 months pregnant & I know with my other birth experience I wished everyone else would have shut the h*ll up because it hurt & people chit chatting with each other in my room while in my room like it's a d*mn social gathering is not cool & then having a bunch of people telling you what to do & not to do gets on my nerves, it's not like they're really helping. You're the one giving birth. They told me not to push b/c you can swell yourself shut but I'm like whatever. Then they looked & realized they were wrong & that they baby's head was coming out & them talking & telling me what to do like they knew what they were f*cking doing anyways pissed me off. I just want everyone to shut up & leave me alone. can you imagine having a really painful stomach ache & diarrhea & then a bunch of people telling you "Don't push, you'll get a hemorrhoid" or just sitting around talking like it's a family gathering at Christmas. It's annoying.

Sorry for my rant.

Staying quiet is true. Thats become common in many birthing methods such as water birth and midwifery. Why start the kid off from warm quiet sounds of mother to sharp cold screaming air and getting slapped. The old concept of childbirth is changing even in American hospitals (where it tends to be the slowest to change to due the abundance of rules)

As far as the placenta, that doesnt sound right. In most places where its common its the mother who eats it (like it is in nature). Its full of the nutrients she has used up. I guess that if he couldnt get her to do it then its at least a way to keep it in the family.

However, in places like the US its more commonly sold by the hospitals to companys that use it in expensive salves, creams, and shampoos. They make alot of money on it which is kindof rude. People should ask to get it back.

Here is the truth about silent birth:
http://www.scientology.org/html/opencms/cos/scientology/en_US/news-media/index.html

What is a quiet or silent birth?

Having a quiet, gentle birth is all about providing the best possible environment for the birthing mother and her new baby.

It is labor and delivery done in a calm and loving environment and with no-spoken words by everyone attending as much as possible. Chatty doctors and nurses, shouts to “PUSH, PUSH” and loud or laughing remarks to “encourage” are the types of things that are meant to be avoided.

As L. Ron Hubbard, Founder of Dianetics and Scientology, wrote, “Everyone must learn to say nothing within the expectant mother’s hearing during labor and delivery.” And, “A woman who wants her child to have the best possible chance will find a doctor who will agree to keep quiet especially during the delivery, and who will insist upon silence being maintained in the hospital delivery room as far as it is humanly possible.”

Does this mean that a mother cannot scream or moan at all?

Of course they can make noises — the point of silent birth is NO WORDS. This is a principle of Dianetics and to fully understand why, read the book Dianetics the Modern Science of Mental Health, by L. Ron Hubbard. It is words that are the culprit. Outside of not speaking, the objective is generally to have as peaceful and relaxing an environment as possible for the mother and child. It is doubtful that any woman could give birth without making any noise at all.

Mothers naturally want to give their baby the best possible start in life and thus keep the birth as quiet as possible.

Does the application of these principles preclude a mother from using medicines?

The Church has no policy against the use of medicines to help a person with a physical situation. This, too, is up to the mother and her doctor.

I did hear somewhere that the woman can make as much noise as she wants, its just the doctors cannot shout out "PUSH" or anything like that.

it is near enough physically impossible to be completly silent during child birth..
