I have been on bedrest and unable to attend childbirth classes, so I'm not sure what the protocol is at my hospital. I know it used to be very uncommon, but I was wondering if the rules have lightened up on this. Any input?

I'm sorry you're on bed rest (I remember how horrible that was). When I had mine, the anesthesiologist just happened to walk into my room to give it to me the one time my husband had stepped out (he went to the car to get something for me). My mom was in there, as was my dad. My dad stepped out while they gave it to me but my mom stayed. They didn't ask my dad to leave though. I'm sure there will be no problems w/ your husband being allowed in the room during that time. Good luck & congrats!!

Some hospitals won't allow any family members in in case they pass out, or they over react to the situation - just call and ask (you can even ask anonymously if you are embarrassed by asking)

You have to be still during an epidural so some hospitals prefer a nurse or 2 to support you so that they can physically restrain you if you move (since they are put in during a contraction) much better than a spouse would.

Good luck

Most hospitals allow friends/family in the room during an epidural.

It would probably be best to call the nurses at the hospital and ask if this will be allowed.

There were about eight different family members in my labor/delivery suite when I was having my epidural put in place, almost six years ago.

I am not sure about the epidural but know that your husband could be there during delivery. When I got my epidural last year, I didn't asks if my husband could come into the room but maybe if I did they would probably let him in.. Good Luck!!

I had a baby in 2002 and another last year and my hubby was in the room the whole time, including when I got the epidural.
That was at 2 different hospitals, and I suspect anyone could have been in there that I wanted.

It may vary from hospital to hospital but the general answer is yes he may be present. I had an epidural and my sons father was present as well as my stepmom. You can get a more definitive answer by simlpy calling up your hospitals delivery ward and asking a doctor (preferably) or a nurse.

They actually made my husband leave the room, they wanted no possible distractions. He did not want to see it either LOL and honestly by that point you will not care if they let him stay as long as you get the pain relief LOL It only takes about 5 minutes and then he came right back in.

My kids are 6 and 8 so it could have changed.

Call them and ask. That's usually something they're pretty open about answering. It is different at each hospital. I had a c-section, so I had a spinal instead, but my husband was NOT in the room for it. It really didn't matter, he came in later. It's not a big deal if you don't let it be.

With both of my pregnancies, my husband was with me for the epidural. But they made everyone else leave (like my mom). After the epidural was put in, they allowed my mom to come back.

My husband was with me the entire time. They never asked him to leave.

Yes, your husband can be present at all times, even when the epidural is inserted. If you sit up for the insertion, your husband will stand in front of you and you will lean into him (your head will be down sort of between your legs). If you lay on your side for the insertion, your husband will be at your head sitting down. He can help you curl into a ball. You'll be fine, I had one...wasn't that big of a deal :) Good luck.
