No, it's not the same thing. Polygamy is one person married to three or more members of the opposite sex. 3-somes are three people enjoying each others bodies. Mormons do NOT practice polygamy, contrary to myth. There are those in the world who do practice polygamy, and they sometimes all live in one house, and quite often have multiple houses. The man (usually) goes to the home of whichever wife it is his turn to be with, and when it's time he goes to the other house. It is most common for the relationship to be based on the love between the man and individual wife. Based on his ability to provide for more than one family. It began way back in history when a woman needed a man to care for her and her family after her husband was killed, or just died. The reason for the marriage was to protect the honor and dignity of the woman. Moral codes were stricter then than now.

Since polygamy is an unusal relationship, the people in it get to make their own rules. I'd bet the rule is that if they are into it, they do it, and if they aren't they don't. This probably depends most on how and why they entered into a group marriage. But a threesome is a sex act--it could be a couple who added another for a thrill, three friends, or whatever, but it isn't a commitment like marriage.

(I think most group marriages in the US are a man who has many wives and all involved have a religous upbringing, so as a generalization I'd say they don't. For other types of group marriages, I'd almost expect that they do.)

Polygamy means that you are married to more than one person. In most forms of polygamy, as practiced, do not have the wives doing each other. Normally because the wives are heterosexual and don't want to do each other.

In Polyamory, though, you will find fewer boundaries (if any) on physical intimacy among the partners. A triad (regardless of genders involved) can all end up in bed together.

No. Polygamy means living together with multiple wives (or husbands) as in a committed relationship.

Doing 3somes means having sex with a third person of whom there does not need to be any commitment towards.

From what I've read, the "wives" do not do it with each other, but that's only from what I've read.

Being a polygamist means being married to more than one person.
Doing 3somes - you aren't necessarily married.
In Mormon polygamy, I think, it's only the husband who gets to sleep with different women. The women only sleep with him - one at a time.
I don't know about polygamy in other cultures.

I would say that was up to them, but yes it would be a distinct possibility. In traditional polygamous marriage, the single spouse generally rotates among the others though. Yes there are societies that practice multiple husbands for one wife, often all brothers will marry the same woman.

The other major difference would be that a polygamous marriage would continue and share family responsibilities where a threesome is over fairly quickly.

Polygamist is a relationship...It's not just 3 people having sex...And yes the women in the polygamist relationship do have sex because they are in a relationship with eachother...

The "arrangement" is that one man has more than one wife. The wives generally have their own quarters... and the husband is not with more than one at a time.
