Me and my husband are expecting our first, and we bring in enough money to not have it, but...is it still a good idea to consider getting WIC or food stamps, the stuff is free so... I'm stuck between deciding if we should or not.

See i look at it a little different then the first responder. I believe that yes my taxes pay for these services and yes so do yours. So why don't you deserve it as much as the person that is sitting at home collecting a check for never doing anything. Only part of these programs are payed for by taxes the rest is paid for by grants. I believe if you qualify get it there is enough for everybody that qualify and if it is not used the money won't go else where it will just sit in the fund.
also you only have to go to wic every 3 months and you don't always have to take your child.
And what may seem like enough money now might not be when your child is here.

personally if you dont need it you shouldnt get it. thats just less money for the programs to spread around to the people who do need it. Also if you make what you consider enough you probably won't come in under the income limits to qualify anyway. i was on food stamps and it was wonderful. once my husband got a slightly better job we lost them because "we made too much" when really we were still struggling to put food on the table, but we came in like $200 over the limit (they go off you're pay before taxes too .which makes it even harder)...and WIC was a life saver when my babies went on fomula. i couldnt have done it w/o WIC. formula is EXPENSIVE. but now that my children dont need formula, and i found a decent job i chose to get off WIC.

WIC and Food Stamps are for people who really need help.

You have to think about your pride and self-respect if you want to take advantage of these programs.

If you are bringing in enough money, why would you need these programs? If you truly need the help, that is another story.

If you do get involved in these types of programs, please know that your life is an open book, you have to report every penny of earnings no matter if it is cash for mowing your neighbors lawn. If you get caught not reporting any income, you will be in trouble with the state. Not a good place to be.

Chances are likely that you and your husband will not qualify if you are bringing in enough money, so you will not have to wonder about it.

Congratulations on the baby, that is wonderful!

I believe they go by a sliding scale of financial need. They might find that you aren't eligible for a lot of benefits.

Even when we were destitute, I refused to take government assistance, but looking back on it, formula is very expensive, and just taking WIC to pay for the formula/diapers/babyfood would be beneficial to any family.

I felt that other people needed it more than we did (like the illegals...sarcastic LOL), and also wasn't interested in the trek to the WIC office every month to verify income, etc. I hate paperwork, and with a newborn, hated leaving the house with her.

Also, I agree with the responder BELOW me....when I talked to my dad about getting assistance, he said that he has paid so many taxes during his life, he would LOVE to see someone in his own family actually BENEFIT from that help.

I was too proud to take it, though.

The problem we had is that we were bringing in enough money, but because we own our home, it was all going out just as fast as we brought it in.
For a little while we were struggling. So I decided to apply for WIC, but we make too much money. So they gave me the first month and told me that if I can prove that we make less money than what was shown on the information I brought in that day that I could try to reapply, but I decided not to.
If you don't need it, don't get it.

If you qualify, you should use WIC. It is not a free program or a handout. For every dollar spent, the taxpayer saves, I don't remember the exact figure but I think it was substantial, like, $75.00 in medicaid costs. It is an education program, not a welfare program. Now, as far as food stamps, that's welfare, and if you don't need it, don't use it.

I make enough money also- I wouldn't touch FoodStamps that welfare and for people that can't afford anything- you dont want that on your name, since if they notice you have a good job and they helped you they might want the money back - happened to a lady i worked with!! But WIC is for everyone- I thought about doing that myself, where you get Milk, Cheese, Eggs, Beans and normal items pregnant women need.

First off, to be considered for those you have to meet income requirements. Which means toy have to make less than a certain amount of money a month (which is around what they think the poverty level is). So you more than likely will not qualify.

WIC really should be for people that can't afford food for their baby, although you can make the right choice if it will help yall out a little. Just be prepared for lots of paperwork and waiting in lines in places you might not want to go. Jennifer

Have you checked to see if you even qualify. They do not give it to you if you make too much money. You should look into this first. If you do make enough money though, you should remember there are plenty of people out there that need it.
good luck!
