What exactly do you mean by a conservationist? We all need to be conservationists or the planet is doomed. When a problem becomes as extreme as this is there is rarely a single solution. The only way to save this earth is for all individuals to use self-discipline to do the things we all know are right. Quit being so lazy and self-indulgent, avoid waste. I'm not optimistic about all this but it's OK. All things work out as they were meant to be.

you assume the planet needs saving...a grand assumption.

conservationists should be buying land with their own money and planting trees/allowing it to restore itself to a pristine state.
they should be starting their own businesses and funding 'clean' energy sources (although getting cleaner than nuclear power will be difficult...with the possible exceptions of wind & water power, but they both have both known and unknown environmental impacts). They should be starting companies to make 'green' transportation systems.
Then with their own products/services they should compete in the global capitalistic market. If their products are better and reasonably priced as compared to the competition, they will win.

as a side note, mine fires in China produce more CO2 annually than all of the motor vehicles in the US combined, as do cattle emissions. Man may have a very small impact on the environment, but that is all, solar flares, solar cycles, natural phenomena (volcanos, animals, geothermal vents, etc) all have a much greater imact than all of mankind's actions. Also the 2nd world/3rd world countries' (like China, India & most of Africa) pollution is an order of magnatude worse than those of 1st world countries like the US and most of Europe.

Educate the masses about the problems our environment faces. That is, educate them on the facts, instead of sensationalist media hype.

most important thing to do to save the planet is to cut ut CO2 emissions. cars should be modified to run on ecofriendly fuels. also plant as many trees as one can. they absorb atmospheric CO2.
