Was he flawed? Certainly, the abuse he and his family took from his early campaigns alter his view of political competition and he did things he shouldn't have done. When compared to President Clinton he comes out far better, in that these things he did wrong were (to a significant degree) to protect the Presidency while the things that Clinton did wrong were simply to protect his personal sexual deviations by lying to governmental agencies.
However, his administration was the one that brought our involvement in South East Asia to a close. He also opened the door to China. These were two things that had to be accomplished.
He was a far better President than either President Kennedy or President Johnson and not as good as President Eisenhower.
Overall he was a better than average President and over time he will be viewed in a more realistic and kinder light.

To the person that said Nixon's biggest mistake was Vietnam, allow me to give you a little history lesson: Johnson got us into Vietnam, not Nixon.
As a leader, Nixon was pretty good. He was the best foreign policy president to that date. He got paranoid and started doing stupid things. Then got caught. Clinton got caught doing stupid things too, don't forget that.
If you were to take Watergate out of the equation, you will find that Nixon was a good president.

"His accomplishments while in office included revenue sharing, the end of the draft, new anticrime laws, and a broad environmental program. As he had promised, he appointed Justices of conservative philosophy to the Supreme Court. One of the most dramatic events of his first term occurred in 1969, when American astronauts made the first moon landing.
Some of his most acclaimed achievements came in his quest for world stability. During visits in 1972 to Beijing and Moscow, he reduced tensions with China and the U.S.S.R. His summit meetings with Russian leader Leonid I. Brezhnev produced a treaty to limit strategic nuclear weapons. In January 1973, he announced an accord with North Viet Nam to end American involvement in Indochina. In 1974, his Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, negotiated disengagement agreements between Israel and its opponents, Egypt and Syria. "
AND he got us out of Viet Nam. I think he did a pretty good job and prefer him over GWB anyday. The end of the draft, alone, endeared him to our hearts.

Compared to today's leadership not that bad. He was basically a liar and a crook but through the misty rose colored glass of time, he's been remembered as being a lot better person than he actually was. I see the same thing happening with Ronald Regan.

he was perhaps the best foreign policy maker the US has known, but he won't be remember for that
his big mistake was viet nam, much like Bush may have done OK if it wasn't for his lust to invade Iraq
I would rate him as an above average president, but not the top 10%

I love all Presidents! They are people, wonderful people.. Flawed, like all of us... But take Bush, for instance, that confused, submissive, mildly retarded, convicted drunken-driver war mongrel.. He's a sweetheart! Read recently that he has cried (in tears) quite often! And he became prez even though he has driven drunk! Awesome!
Let's all love each other..
Love me!
