I have just found out that I am pregnant. I've worked out I fell pregnant about 3 weeks before I started my new job. Does this mean I won't be entitled to any maternity pay? I'm worried!

My employee handbook says you get full pay at normal rate for 6 months if you have worked there for 26 weeks, 15 weeks before the baby is due. The problem is I will only have worked for about 23 weeks, 15 weeks before the baby is due. (hope this makes sense) So if my employer doesn't pay me will i get Statutory maternity pay? I'm in the UK.
I daren't ask my employer yet, as it is too soon.

You are never "entitled" to maternity pay. You will have to check with your companies policy book. Do they kow you are pregnant now or have you not told them. If you havn't just let them believe you fell pregnant after starting with their company. Some companies may not cover a pre-existing condition. It'sappy to lie but honestly thats what I would do.

Each company is different. Your employer may have policies that dictate the order in which you can take different kinds of leave. In any case, you'll want to start looking into your options as early as you can during your pregnancy and make sure you have all your paperwork sorted out before the baby arrives.
Your parental leave rights in America is 0 weeks Paid maternity leave, 0 weeks Paid paternity leave, 12 weeks Unpaid maternity leave, and 12 weeks Unpaid paternity leave, and the restrictions include to be covered under FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act):
Must work for a covered employer (all public agencies; private companies with 50 or more employees within 75 miles.)
Must have worked for covered employer for at least 12 months prior, and at least 1250 hours in previous 12 months. Other restrictions apply.

If the company offers maternity pay, you may get it. If not, you won't. If the company is large enough, you may be entitled to maternity leave without pay. If it's a very small company, you may not. Isn't health care in the USA grand!

You are entitled to whatever the company offers are policy. Not all employers have maternity pay, although they must have atleast 6 weeks leave.
You can get unemployment in some cases, and always disability.

it depends what your company's policy is on maternity leave pay. some companies dont even offer it. ask someone in the human resources or payroll department at your work. also, is there an employee handbook or something that explains all the different types of leave??

Depends on the company, some say you need to be their a year to qualify for maternity leave/pay. Just like getting paid vacation time.

It will depend on if your company has maternity pay or short term disability. If not some states do have short term disability. that is if you are in the US. Were I live in WA State there is no short term disability by the state and my company doesn't offer it either, so like many women, I will not be paid while I am gone.
good luck!

Contact human resources at the company where you work. Remain anonymous.
