Well, a peninsula is a strip of land surrounded on three sides by water, connected only one one side to the mainland.
One you have probably heard of is Cape Cod. Easy to find on a map- it's in Massachusetts. It's the little piece that curves into the ocean like a puppy tail.

Florida is a peninsula as well as Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, Baja Mexico is one as well.
Oddly, I live on the Balboa Peninsula in Southern California but you can't see it on a map - unless you google SoCal and zoom in.
