1 km = 1000 m (km stands for "kilometer". Kilo is the latin word for 1000, so one kilometer literally means one thousand meters). So divide whatever distance you have in meters by 1000 and you've got your distance in km.

In your case, 1.24 m would equal 0.00124 km

The same goes for 1 kg = 1000 g, by the way. The metric system is quite simple once you get the hang of it. :)

Since a meter is 1/1000th of a kilometer, 1.24m would be 0.00124km.

Just the same as with the mm in the other question.

You know there are 1000 m/km, then:

1.24 m * 1/1000 km/m
or
1.24 m * 0.001 km/m

And you have your answer.
