It depends, I usually try to keep it once a week.

I buy things like Toilet tissue, ketchup, sugar, coffee, . . .
in bulk (or really big sizes) every couple of months or so because it is cheaper.

My fresh food, veggies and meat I buy once a week.

Once a month if you can afford it, depending on the size of your family. Simple reason -- fewer impulse buys the fewer times you are physically in the store. Of course you'll have to come back for things like milk and such, but those are only in-&-out trips. You may miss out on weekly sales, but those are more than made up for by those random impulse buys. Buy a lot of the items you can freeze when they're on sale (cheese and such), and it might be a good idea (depending on your situation) to go in with a couple other families on a Sam's Club type membership and split the groceries between everyone.

Somewhere in between. The perishables once a week, and the stuff that will keep once a month.

Keep in mind, too, that you will want to watch for specials and to buy generic and house brands most times.

I found depending how many people you have in your family if you do a huge shop at warehouses like Price Club or Sam Club you save money only getting milk and odds ends! I save money every week! Hope that helps!

WHAT?!?
If you buy food for a whole month at one time, will all that food stay fresh and not spoil?
If you're going to buy a month's worth of food at one time, IT'S MORE EXPENSIVE.
If you're going to buy a week's worth of food once per week, you'd possibly spend the same over a month as you'd spend at one time for the whole month.
The good thing about buying a month's worth is that you'd spend less on gas.

get your perishables, fresh fruits & vegies as needed....but if you buy in bulk & keep canned items, non-perishable & other items on hand you will ultimately save $$$. if you get most of your items in one trip you will save time & $$$ w/out even considering other costs. & of course you can purchase a quantity of meat when you see a good deal --then freeze.

also, i like to buy many of my fruits/vegis from farmer's mkt. not cheaper in cost but way better quality!!!!!!
